November Bass

This week, my daughter was hostitalized to have an ACL reconstruction. She now can't walk without assistance, so my wife and I are taking care of her. I took a day off today to help her, but could spare time for a short time early in the morning (before she got up), so I decided to go fishing. I could catch three bass with a Bass Oreno and Zig Wag.

October bass

I got skunked a couple of times in Sep-Oct, so I wanted to catch a bass by all means today. I first tied a Heddon RH Wounded Spook that I recently obtained, and luckily I could catch a bass as soon as I started fishing. It was a skinny bass, but fought hard.

I changeds baits to a Zara II, as water level there was almost full and I thought tighter dog-walk action would work. I could catch another bass with it, and succellfully took a video of the fight with the bass. Both bass were not so big, but as always size doesn't matter.

Today's tackle: ABU Ambassadeur 5000, Fenwick Lunker Gear LGX 38C, Daiwa Sight Surf #4 (orange), Heddon Wounded Spook, Zara Spook, Zara II, Pico Slasher, Nip-I-Diddee, etc.

Rugby-ball bass

I took a day off today, and went fishing. In the first pond, floating weeds were growing so widely that I could cast in only a limited are and got skunked. Then, I headed to another pond. When I started fishing again there, it's getting windy and I thought poppers and prop baits would work fine. I tied a Pico Pop and checked shore areas with it. Soon, an adult bass bit it. It was a good fighter and I could successfully catch it.

It got windier and winder, so I switched to a Mugnum Torpedo. Another bass showed a big blow-up, and I also enjoyed catching it.

It got so windy that I decided to fish in a small inlet. There're a school of bluegill in the back side of the inlet, and I caught some of them. I suggested a big bass, which learned to eat those bluegill, may have been hiding out somewhere near the school, so I cast a Nip-I-Diddee under an overhung tree.

I paused the bait until water ripples dissapered, then jerked it, paused again, and repeated the same actions a few times. BLOW-UP! I saw a big rugby-ball bass attack my bait with my own eyes, and immediately set a hook hard. It fought much harder than I expected. In gerenal, I know summer bass fight hard, but it was the hardest one among the bass I caught in this fishing season. Fortunately, the tackle I used today was a little heavier than thouse I usually use, and I could finally catch it. It was a well-muscled 4lb bass, though the body length was shorter than I first thought.

On the way back from this pond, I visited another area to check another fishing tackle combo, but I got skunked there. Anyway, I was completely satisfied with the result of today's fishing.

Today's tackle: ABU Ambassadeur 5000C, Phillipson 3M (F562), Daiwa Sight Surf #5, ABU Ambassadeur FIVE, Lew's Fuji Super Speedstick S1L-156, Daiwa Sight Surf #4, Heddon Zara Spook, 210, Lucky 13, Magnum Torpedo, Pico Pop, Southbend Nip-I-Diddee, etc.

I caught  bass for the first time in these two and half months. The fishing was much better than I expected, and it was a lot of fun to catch such nice bass with my favorite topwater baits.

Good day off

I could take a compensatory day off today, and went fishing in farm ponds a little far south from here.

In the first pond, which is very famous among local anglers and so many of them often fish, I got a few small bites and caught a small bluegill with a Chugger Spook. I gave up fishing there and headed to the next pond. The weather was cloudy, so I was thinking I would have some more chances to catch bass.

After about 15 or 20-minute drive, I got there and re-started fishing. I tied a Pico Pop (black shore color) and cast it near-shore spots one by one. When I cast it into a small spot under overhung trees, which you can easily see a prime point, my line slightly got caught on leaves of the trees. I twitched my rod a few time, and then immediately my bait sank underwater without any splashes and sounds. I suggested it as a bite and set a hook hard. Yes, it was a nice bass hitting my bait! I enjoyed fighting with it and finally caught it.

After I caught this bass, I also got some more bites with a Lucky13, Wounded Spook, and a few others. Some bass were spooky and didn't bite hard, some male bass were protecting their juvenile bass, and some attacked my baits with a big blowup. One that I caught with a Wounded Spook was also a good fighter and I enjoyed a lot.

This time, I tried editing my videos using a GoPro application. I can't fully master it, but here is one that I made for today's fishing.

Today's tackle: ABU Ambassadeur 5000 De Luxe, Phillipson #705, Daiwa Sight Surf #4 (yellow), Heddon Big Bud, Chugger Spook, Zara Spook, Lucky 13, Wounded Spook, Pico Pop,  etc.

Nice bass with an XRW Zara Spook

I went fishing last weekend and got skunked. Yesterday, I went fishing carrying a new toy, GoPro Hero 5 Session (action-sports camera), and got skunked in a row. I'd like to report this nice camera later, as I haven't checked all the functions of it, yet, and can't fully handle it.

Anyway, weather reports said our area would have warm rainfalls today, so I decided to go short-time fishing again early this morning before the rain. I went went much less lures than usual. I started with a Crazy Crawler, but had no bites. Then I switched to a white-shore Zara Spook (older one) and carefully checked small spots one by one.

At one shallow spot set back from open area, I long-cast my Zara Spook. Fortunately, I could send it to a most-remote part of the spot, but unfortunately the presentation was with a little over-speed and I was afraid the noise of splashdown may have surprised fish. Then, I paused it much longer than I first expected until all the water ripples calmed, and gave it dog-walking actions slowly but steadily. Just as soon as it walked two times, it suddenly got under the water surface with a small blowup. It was time I had to set a hook hard and reel my line! I soon noticed it a nice bass because the fight was so hard. It really hold out until I landed it. It was a 4 1/2lb female bass, a late spawner for this area. I couldn't be happier to be able to catch it.

Magnum Torpedo

I went fishing again this morning. In the first pond, I got no bites at all and skunked. I gave up fishing, but changed my idea and headed to another pond. I saw water level of the pond got extremely low during the last winter, and I was anxious if fish would be still inhabited. However, when I started fishing there, I saw a big carp swimming near shore area, so I believed bass would be still there.

I kept casting my baits, though I changed and tried many types of lures, and fished almost 3/4 of the pond. I almost gave up catching a bass, but when I cast a Heddon Magnum Torpedo to a small shore spot, I noticed something start to chase it. I paused for a few seconds, and gave it a subtle action to rotate the tail prop several times. Bang! I got a big blow-up and set a hook hard. I felt a good response and the fish I hooked fought hard. I took time to try to catch it, but finally could land it. It was smaller than my first bass of this year, but was a nice bass. I felt happy not to get skunked today.

Today's tackle: ABU Ambassadeur 5000, Fenwick Lunkerstik 2053, Daiwa Sight Surf #4 (orange), Heddon Zara Spook, Chugger Spook, Lucky 13, Basser, Magnum Torpedo, etc.

Just restarted this weblog

I'd been too busy working in this past winter, and I couldn't spend much time thinking about and keeping this weblog. I'm still busy, but I'd like to restart it as 2018 fishing season has just started.

I went fishing early this morning. To tell the truth, I went short-time fishing twice in March and got skunked in a row. It was too cold for topwater fishing then and I felt frozen. It's got a little warmer this week, and I decided to go again.

I started fishing at about 05:00 am in a farm pond, and in an hour I fished almost all the near-shore spots except for one small inlet. I almost gave up catching a bass, but I tried a long-cast into a spot surrounded with submerged branches of a tree. The bait I tied was a Heddon Lucky 13 in green scale dace color (D), one of my go-to baits. I waited until all the ripples disappeared, and then twitched the dace a few times. BLOW-UP, and I saw a big bass lean forward to grab my bait! I set a hook hard, and felt a telling heavy response. The bait I used is with 3-treble hooks, and I believed it'd be hard for the fish to escape from the hooks. Finally, I could catch it, and I felt awfully glad with the first bass of this season.

Today's tackle: ABU Record 5000 (BLK), Phillipson #705, Stren 14lb (Clear/Blue Fluorescent), Heddon Zara Spook, Chugger Spook, Lucky 13, Pico Pop, Cotton Cordell Boy Howdy (w/ props), etc.
